The Sagrada Familia
The Sagrada Familia
is arguably the most famous tourist attraction in Barcelona. Gaudi's largest and most obscure work, this church rises high above all the surrounding buildings and is yet to be completed. Antonio Gaudi was revolutionary in the modernist movement that swept across Barcelona in the late 19th Century and his Sagrada Familia is a prime example of that. Although unfinished the privately funded, Roman Catholic church has been planned to operate some ceremonies in September 2010.
After Gaudi's death, another highly acclaimed architect Domenech who was responisble for the wonderful Palau de Musica took over construction btu was interrupted by thi Spanish Civil War. The plans for the rest of the church were destroyed by some Spanish anarchists and as a result the Sagrada Familia is having to be completed by eye as it were. It is scheduled to be finished in 2026.
The Sagrada Familia
costs 7€ to go inside where there is some amazing stained glass but if you would rather not pay do not worry, the church is as spectacular from the outside. It is also worth going to Park Güell so that you can contextualise just how tall it is in comparison with the rest of the city and see the eerie nature with which it emerges up from out of the buildings.
