MaremàgnumOn the Moll d’Espanya or the Spanish pier in the old harbour of Barcelona, the shopping mall Maremàgnum is situated. Here you’ll find a lot of shops, bars and restaurants and a cinema. Nearby you’ll also find the Aquàrium of Barcelona and the Imax movie theatre. During your holiday in Barcelona, visiting this shopping and entertainment paradise a true recommendation.

Eating out in the Gothic Area

Els Quatre GatsA legend in Barcelona is without any doubt the café and beanery Els Quatre Gats. It was inaugurated on the 12th of June 1897, and was inspired by restaurant Le Chat Noir in Paris. From scratch it already was a unusual and exceptional place, something in between a tavern, traditional pension and a sophisticated modernistic café.

Museums

The MUHBAThe Museu d’Història de la Ciutat de Barcelona (MUHBA) was inaugurated in 1943 and is situated at the Plaça del Rei in the old city centre. The Plaça del Rei is not to be confused with Plaça Reial that’s situated at the Ramblas. The initiator and also first director of this museum was the historian Agustí Duran i Sanpere. The present museum complex in fact consists out of three buildings: the Casa Padellàs, the Capella de Santa Àgata and the Palau Reial Major.

Tips and 'good to know' information

In most of the hotels in Barcelona you can leave your luggage at the reception on arrival before getting into your room, or if you want to go into the city on your last day and have to leave your room. In case your hotel doesn’t allow this, or for any other reason won’t store your luggage, you can always go to: the airport, metro and train station Sants, bus station Nord and Locker Barcelona, near plaça Catalunya. Just so you know; ‘Luggage depot’ means ‘consigna’ as well in Catalan as in Spanish.

Culture

Montjuïc CastleOn top of the hill Montjuïc, at 173 meters above sea level, you’ll find a castle worth visiting. Originally it was a fortress, built in 1640 during the Catalan rebellion against the presence of the Castilian troops in Catalonia. It had to serve as a protection for Barcelona against the army of King Felipe IV. This simple construction was said to be built in barely 30 days.
